THE STORY
Yoga Democracy started from our belief that yoga wear could be made based on a corporate philosophy that matched the values of the practice itself. The concept of Ahimsa, meaning do no harm, is at the core of everything YD stands for including the fabrics we choose, the way we assemble our garments and the decision to recycle all inputs used in the dyeing process. YD has made a commitment to make 95% of its garments from recycled fibers and to make giving back part of its DNA from day one.
We adhere to a strict standard in design, production and corporate behavior that means you can proud as a consumer to be associated with us and what we do.
We sew our garments out of our workshop in Cave Creek, Arizona sweat-shop free and are committed to US manufacturing for the long term. We only use responsible fabric manufacturers, which have put in place excellent waste-water treatment and emission management plans. The polymer that goes into spinning the fabric for our leggings is guaranteed to be post-consumer in origin which means you can be assured that by purchasing our product you really are making a tangible difference. Our recycled nylon contains 65% recycled content including fabric remnants, fishing nets and carpets. It requires around one half the energy to produce as standard or virgin nylon with no compromise on quality either in durability, texture or fabric recovery. We disclose the country where we source our fabric so have the assurance of relying on high national environmental standards as well as corporate.
We dye our printed leggings in-house. We use the most environmentally friendly dyeing process available. Our process is low-energy and zero-water and does not generate any waste water or harmful emissions. Our non-toxic dyes do not bleed and do not fade in the wash. We recycle all paper used in the process. We donate 10% of our net profit to environmental causes worldwide. Where we source fabric that has been dyed by the manufacturer as in the case of our recycled nylon, we choose to work only with companies that adhere to the highest standards of waste water treatment, greenhouse gas mitigation and energy usage.
We turn things that might otherwise end up in landfill into beautiful clothing. Our printed leggings are made from 78% recycled polyester made from 100% post-consumer product. Each pair of our leggings represents the equivalent of around 12 standard size water bottles. Our tops and shorts, made from recycled nylon, represent around 1/2 lb of recycled fishing net. The manufacturing process for both our recycled nylon and recycled polyester uses one half the energy and produces one half the greenhouse gas emissions as their standard counter-parts.
